Frequently asked questions
Why is my BMP file so big?
BMP stores every pixel with no compression, so files are often 5-10x larger than an equivalent JPG.
Will converting lose quality?
A small amount, since JPG is lossy β but at high quality it is not noticeable, and the size saving is substantial.
Do I need to install anything?
No software and no sign-up. The BMP-to-JPG converter runs in your web browser, so it works on any device β Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone β straight from this page.
Can I convert more than one file at once?
Yes. Drop in several images and they are converted together; a single file downloads directly, while a batch arrives as a ZIP.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser β your images never leave your device.
Why convert BMP to JPG?
BMP files are uncompressed and often huge. Converting to JPG shrinks them dramatically for sharing or uploading.
Understanding the two formats
BMP β BMP. BMP is an old Windows bitmap format that stores images completely uncompressed. That means perfect quality but enormous files β often five to ten times larger than an equivalent JPG or PNG. BMP is rarely used on the modern web, so converting to a compressed format dramatically cuts the size with little or no visible loss.
JPG β JPEG. JPEG is the universal photo format β nearly 30 years old and readable by every device, browser and app on earth. It uses lossy compression that is superb for photographs, keeping files small while looking clean, which is why cameras and phones default to it. Its weaknesses are that it cannot store transparency and it adds visible halos around sharp text and hard edges, so it is a poor choice for logos, screenshots and line art.
What to expect from the conversion
BMP has no compression at all, so the size reduction converting to JPG is usually very large.
Converting a batch
Drop in as many BMP files as you need and they are converted together, arriving as a single ZIP. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a server, a batch is limited only by your own memory, and there is no queue, no daily cap and no sign-up. Private or sensitive images stay entirely with you.
Need a different conversion, or want to process a batch? The full image converter handles JPG, PNG and WebP together, and you can pair it with the compressor if the result also needs to hit a size limit.
Other ways to convert a BMP file
The same BMP reader feeds each conversion below, so whichever output you pick the file is still decoded on your own device.
Other ways to get a JPG file
If what you are starting from is not a BMP, open the converter that matches your own file instead.
Working through a pile of files? The full image converter handles a whole batch at once.
