Frequently asked questions
Does this keep the animation?
No β the first frame becomes a still WebP image.
Why choose WebP?
It is smaller and higher quality than exporting a GIF frame as-is.
Do I need to install anything?
No software and no sign-up. The GIF-to-WEBP converter runs in your web browser, so it works on any device β Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone β straight from this page.
Can I convert more than one file at once?
Yes. Drop in several images and they are converted together; a single file downloads directly, while a batch arrives as a ZIP.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser β your images never leave your device.
Why convert GIF to WEBP?
Convert a GIF to a WebP still for a smaller, higher-quality image than a GIF frame.
Understanding the two formats
GIF β GIF. GIF is an old format limited to 256 colours per frame, which makes it poor for photographs but historically popular for simple animations. For a still image it has been comprehensively surpassed by PNG (for graphics) and WebP (for size), so converting a GIF frame to a modern format almost always gives a smaller, better-looking result.
WEBP β WebP. WebP is a modern format from Google that supports both lossy and lossless modes, transparency and even animation. At comparable quality it is typically 25β35% smaller than JPG and much smaller than PNG, which is why it is now the default for fast-loading websites. Every current browser displays it, though some older desktop apps and upload forms still do not accept it.
What to expect from the conversion
Only the first frame is used; animation is not preserved in the WebP output.
Converting a batch
Drop in as many GIF files as you need and they are converted together, arriving as a single ZIP. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a server, a batch is limited only by your own memory, and there is no queue, no daily cap and no sign-up. Private or sensitive images stay entirely with you.
Need a different conversion, or want to process a batch? The full image converter handles JPG, PNG and WebP together, and you can pair it with the compressor if the result also needs to hit a size limit.
Other ways to convert a GIF file
The same GIF reader feeds each conversion below, so whichever output you pick the file is still decoded on your own device.
Other ways to get a WEBP file
If what you are starting from is not a GIF, open the converter that matches your own file instead.
Working through a pile of files? The full image converter handles a whole batch at once.
